The Hands I Couldn't Hold

Death Stranding · Sam Bridges

The story in the song

This original song is written as a tribute to Sam Bridges from Death Stranding — the man who kept walking through grief, distance, and the dead when the world had already given him every reason to stop. Built as a story-driven GMV, this release follows Sam through loss, touch aversion, broken memory, BB / Lou, and the brutal cost of choosing the living again and again.

The song moves from death-haunted isolation into the wounds Sam never escaped: the memory of a wife and child, the distance he built around himself, the bodies left in the tar, and the long road that kept demanding more from him. The GMV follows that same descent and return through beaches, ruin, rain, BB imagery, Cliff memory, and the quiet moments where Sam chooses not to disappear.

Lyrics

Don't reach for me Not unless you want the dead My skin remembers every room where love went red A wife in the night and a child I never knew A crater where a future should have broken through They called me back from death but not back to grace So I wore my distance like a mask across my face No touch, no cure, no clean way through Just the rain and the ruins and the work I had to do These hands I couldn't hold Built walls out of skin and salt and cold Death sent me back, but not to who I'd been Still when the sirens called I walked back in Every body on the tar, every face inside the glass Every bridge I kept from breaking made the next one hurt less fast I am not a saint of endings I am just the man who stayed When the world had learned too well How to rot, divide, and fade If I cannot be held I can still haul the light If I cannot be healed I can still finish the night These hands I couldn't hold Still carried what was left of something whole Death sent me back, but not to who I'd been Still when the living called I walked back in Just Sam Still walking
