The Crown Took Everything
Game of Thrones · Daenerys Targaryen
The story in the song
This original Game of Thrones tribute follows Daenerys Targaryen from the frightened child searching for home to the queen who finally reaches the Iron Throne after grief, destiny, and power have taken almost everything. It treats her ending as a tragedy of agency and accumulated loss - neither a celebration of destruction nor a denial of responsibility.
The final chorus turns conquest into an empty room: she wins the throne, loses the world, and meets the last consequence in the arms of the person she loved.

Lyrics
The room is cold, the city still,
Ash falls where the banners burn.
One step from all I crossed the world for -
Why does victory feel like no return?
I see a child behind a red door,
Bare feet running through borrowed rooms,
Counting every ship as shelter,
Calling exile something she could choose.
She had no crown, she had no country,
Only stories in her brother’s hands.
She swore one day the world would know her,
She would never beg for home again.
But every road I named my destiny
Left another grave behind.
How much must a queen surrender
Before the throne is truly mine?
The crown took wings from the sky,
Took the hands that held me when I cried,
Took the friend who knew my heart,
Took the man who watched it fall apart.
I broke the wheel, I fed the flame,
Till love grew frightened of my name.
Now iron waits beneath my feet -
The crown took everything from me.
One son fell beyond the frozen dark,
One fell burning through the blue.
My oldest shield died in my arms,
My truest voice was taken too.
I heard her final word like thunder -
“Dracarys” across the sea.
Was that the moment chains became ashes,
Or the moment they closed over me?
I called my fury justice,
Called their terror peace.
Every loss made mercy smaller,
Every victory made it weak.
The crown took wings from the sky,
Took the hands that held me when I cried,
Took the friend who knew my heart,
Took the man who watched it fall apart.
I broke the wheel, I fed the flame,
Till love grew frightened of my name.
Now iron waits beneath my feet -
The crown took everything from me.
Little girl, do you forgive me?
You wanted walls no one could take.
I built them out of fire and bodies,
Then wondered why they would not stay.
If home was never made of kingdoms,
If love was all I had to save,
Why did I cross the world for iron
Just to rule an empty grave?
The crown took wings from the sky,
Took every face that called me kind,
Took the future I had sworn
Would rise untouched from what was torn.
I won the room, I lost the world,
Still see that homeless, frightened girl.
One final kiss, one fading beat -
The crown takes even what is left of me.
No red door.
No lemon tree.
Only iron -
Waiting for me.
