Steel Carries the Light

Fallout · Brotherhood of Steel

The story in the song

Steel Carries the Light is an original cinematic tribute anthem for Elder Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout 3 - the chapter that chose the Capital Wasteland's people over locked doors and old-world hoarding.

This song follows the Brotherhood from the Citadel and the D.C. ruins through Project Purity, Sarah Lyons' Pride, Liberty Prime, and the clean-water dawn. It is about steel used as a shield: for the thirsty, for the lost, for the ones left behind.

Lyrics

Static from the tower, dust upon the dial D.C. burns in amber, mile after mile From the bones of the old world Hear the signal climb Steel on the horizon, marching out of time We crossed the waste for the relics of men For sleeping machines and the sins of then But Lyons looked past every locked steel door Saw children shaking on a concrete floor So we broke from the book Not the oath in the bone No knight keeps honor by standing alone When the city screamed under radioactive rain We raised our rifles in the streets again Call us fallen, call us strayed from the line Still the sword has wings when the weak need time By the rust-red river, by the monument's spine We swore the dark would not own this sky Steel carries the light through the Capital night Armor scarred, hearts burning bright For the thirsty, for the lost For the ones left behind Under Lyons, we carry the light Steel carries the light, let the old towers ring From the Citadel gates to the broken wing No crown, no throne, just the line we hold tight Under Lyons, we carry the light Steel! Steel! Carry the light! Lyons! Lyons! Hold the line! Steel! Steel! Carry the light! Brotherhood rising through the Capital night! Sarah called the Pride to the shattered square With a lion on steel and smoke in the air The Enclave came in black Like a storm on the tide But the water still dreamed on the other side Then the old giant woke in thunder and chrome With a pre-war heart and a graveyard home Every step was a drum, every laser a sun Till the clean-water song had begun Call us lost, call us bleeding out faith Still a shield is a shield At the end of days When the sirens died and the dawn broke white We heard the wasteland breathe For the first clean night Steel carries the light through the Capital night Armor scarred, hearts burning bright For the thirsty, for the lost For the ones left behind Under Lyons, we carry the light Steel carries the light, let the old towers ring From the Citadel gates to the broken wing No crown, no throne, just the line we hold tight Under Lyons, we carry the light We are not the bunker, we are not the lock Not dead men's thunder under dead men's rock If the past is a weapon Let the future be a well Let the purifier sing like a bell For every nameless town where the children hide For every caravan on the razorline For every broken soul with no flag to fly We are the steel between death and life Boots in the dust - lock, load, rise! Hands to the sky where the radstorms die! Scribes in the dark, knights in the fight! Steel for the people, steel for the light! Boots in the dust - lock, load, rise! Hands to the sky where the radstorms die! Scribes in the dark, knights in the fight! Steel for the people, steel for the light! Steel carries the light through the Capital night Armor scarred, hearts burning bright For the thirsty, for the lost For the ones left behind Under Lyons, we carry the light Steel carries the light when the sirens all fade When the Enclave falls and the ghosts parade No crown, no throne, just the oath held tight Under Lyons, we carry the light From the Citadel wall to the river wide Let the radio whisper what the ruins survived In the clean-water dawn, under ash-white skies The Brotherhood stands, and the Lion still rises
