No Heart But War

The Elder Scrolls · Pelinal Whitestrake

The story in the song

A dark cinematic Elder Scrolls tribute to Pelinal Whitestrake, the Divine Crusader whose freedom war became a warning as much as a legend.

This song follows Pelinal through the Alessian Rebellion: the chains of the Nedes, the shadow of Ayleid tyranny, the love and loss that broke something human in him, and the terrifying question at the center of his myth. What happens when the weapon that saves the oppressed cannot stop being a weapon?

Lyrics

Under the armor No quiet drum Only a red light Singing what I become They asked if I was Shor returned I spat the name away No god should have to own the things I did in freedom's day I had no hearth, no childhood road No grave prepared for me Just red resolve beneath the plate And captives to set free Every chain makes a sound Every tyrant hears it late I was thunder in a body I was anger given weight No heart but war No sleep but the call I was made for freedom And I was built to fall No heart but war No peace in my name If I burn the cage to ashes Do not worship the flame I loved the ones who dared to rise But love was hard to hold Morihaus could laugh in storm I answered blood with gold Huna fell and something broke The map went black behind I learned how holy wrath can leave A murdered world behind Alessia prayed the sky awake To cool the rage in me But once a weapon knows its edge What else can it be? No heart but war No sleep but the call I was made for freedom And I was built to fall No heart but war No peace in my name If I burn the cage to ashes Do not worship the flame Let the scribes argue what I was Echo, man, or missing god I know the cries that called me down I know the fields my shadow trod If I was wrong, remember why If I was right, remember more A savior made of rage can free And still become a war No heart but war No sleep but the call I was made for freedom And I was built to fall No heart but war No crown, no throne, no claim If I burn the cage to ashes Do not worship the flame No heart but war No prayer without cost Where freedom learned my name Something human was lost
